English is the fastest section in SSC CGL Tier I. Twenty-five questions in fifteen minutes is comfortable for a prepared candidate and brutal for an unprepared one, because almost every question is recall-based — you either know the idiom, the one word substitution or the grammar rule, or you do not. That makes English the single most improvable section through chapter wise practice.

How Many English Questions Are Asked in SSC CGL?

English is worth 50 marks in Tier I and 135 marks in Tier II Paper I — the largest single module in the whole SSC CGL scheme.

Vocabulary — the repeat-heavy block

Synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases, one word substitution and spelling together account for eight to ten questions in every Tier I shift, and SSC repeats these words heavily across years. This is the block where chapter wise practice converts directly into marks: every test you attempt adds words you have actually seen in an SSC-style question rather than a random list.

Grammar — rule-based and drillable

Spot the error, sentence improvement, active and passive voice, and direct and indirect narration are governed by a finite set of rules. Once subject–verb agreement, article use, preposition pairing and tense sequence are solid, these questions become near-automatic. Level 2 tests in these chapters are the fastest way to find which specific rule keeps costing you marks.

Comprehension — cloze test, para jumbles and RC

The cloze passage is worth five marks in a single block, which makes it the highest-value item in the section. Para jumbles reward a fixed approach — find the opening sentence, then link pronouns and connectors. Reading comprehension is limited in Tier I but becomes central in Tier II Paper I, where English carries 45 questions.

How to Use Chapter Wise Practice for SSC CGL English

1. Run vocabulary daily, grammar in blocks. Ten minutes a day on synonyms, antonyms, idioms and one word substitution beats one long session a week — this is memory work.
2. Do spot the error and sentence improvement together. They test the same rules from two directions, so practising them back to back doubles the return on each rule you learn.
3. Treat the cloze test as five marks, not five questions. Read the whole passage once before filling any blank; the later blanks often decide the earlier ones.
4. Write down every unknown word from the solution screen. SSC repeats vocabulary heavily, so a word missed today is very likely a word asked again.
5. Target 13 minutes for 25 questions. English is where you save time for the maths section — practise with the timer on once a chapter reaches Level 2.
6. Cross-check against real papers. After four or five chapters are solid, attempt a previous year paper and then a full mock test to confirm the speed holds under sectional timing.
