SSC CGL Pay Level 6 Posts: Salary, Job Profile, Perks & Promotion

Last updated: 7 August 2026

Pay Level 6 is the most underrated tier in the entire SSC CGL structure. Candidates rank these posts below Level 7 almost automatically, and for a monthly figure that is roughly ₹10,000 lower at entry that instinct is understandable. But it means very good jobs — Junior Statistical Officer, NIA Sub Inspector, Divisional Accountant — routinely go to people who never seriously considered them.

Level 6 posts carry a basic pay of ₹35,400 and an approximate in-hand salary of ₹50,000 to ₹65,000 depending on posting city. Every standard Central Government benefit applies: DA, HRA, TA, NPS, medical facilities, LTC, full leave entitlement and a defined promotion ladder.

Three things make this tier worth a closer look than it usually gets:

  • Smaller cadres often promote faster. A large cadre with thousands of Inspectors has thousands of people waiting for the same Superintendent vacancies. A cadre of a few hundred does not. Over a full career, the promotion you get at year eight instead of year fourteen can outweigh the entry-pay difference entirely.
  • Some Level 6 posts have better work than Level 7 posts. JSO does genuine data analysis. NIA SI investigates national-security cases. Research Assistant at NHRC works on human rights inquiries. None of those has an exact equivalent at Level 7.
  • Cut-offs are lower. These posts are reachable for candidates in the middle of the merit list who would miss Income Tax Inspector or CBI SI entirely.

Below, all ten Level 6 posts are covered with department, age limit, job profile, perks and promotion chain.

Statistics and Research Posts (Level 6)

These three posts are the analytical corner of SSC CGL. If you have a quantitative background — statistics, economics, mathematics or a research-heavy degree — this is where your existing training actually gets used, rather than being irrelevant to the job you land in.

1. Junior Statistical Officer (JSO)

Job profile

Collects, compiles, analyses and interprets statistical data used for national surveys, official statistics and government planning. JSOs work across the National Sample Survey wing, the Central Statistics Office and field operations divisions, on the data that eventually becomes India's official economic and social indicators.

  • Data collection and supervision of survey field work
  • Scrutiny, validation and tabulation of survey returns
  • Statistical analysis and preparation of reports
  • Compilation of indices and official statistical series
  • Coordination with state statistical agencies

Why choose this post

JSO is the best analytical job available through SSC CGL, and the only one where a statistics or maths background is a direct professional advantage rather than merely an exam advantage. The work-life balance is among the best on the entire list, the work is intellectually substantive, and the higher age limit of 32 makes it accessible to candidates who have aged out of most other posts.

Two caveats worth knowing before you rank it. JSO has an eligibility requirement — a degree with Statistics or Mathematics as a subject, as specified in the notification — so not every candidate can opt for it. And Tier 2 includes an additional statistics paper for JSO applicants, which means committing to extra preparation well before the exam.

Perks

  • Analytical, intellectually engaging office work
  • Excellent work-life balance with regular hours
  • Higher age limit of 32 years
  • DA, HRA, TA, NPS and medical facilities
  • LTC, paid leave and gazetted holidays
  • Professional growth in official statistics and survey methodology

Promotion path

  1. Junior Statistical Officer
  2. Senior Statistical Officer
  3. Assistant Director
  4. Deputy Director and above, as per departmental rules

2. Statistical Investigator Grade II

Job profile

Conducts surveys, compiles statistical reports, analyses departmental data and supports evidence-based policy formulation within the parent ministry.

  • Designing and conducting departmental surveys
  • Collecting and verifying primary data
  • Statistical compilation, tabulation and analysis
  • Preparing periodic statistical reports and returns
  • Supporting policy formulation with data inputs

Why choose this post

Statistical Investigator suits candidates who want analytical work but with more variety than a purely desk-bound role — survey work takes you out of the office periodically. The cadre is smaller and more department-specific than JSO, so the exact nature of the work depends heavily on which ministry you are allotted to.

Perks

  • Research and data-oriented work
  • Office environment with periodic field survey work
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical facilities and LTC
  • Clear advancement within the statistical cadre

Promotion path

  1. Statistical Investigator Grade II
  2. Senior Statistical Investigator
  3. Statistical Officer and above, as per departmental rules

3. Research Assistant — National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)

Job profile

Conducts research on human rights issues, prepares analytical reports, examines policy matters, and assists in the Commission's inquiries into complaints and its documentation work.

  • Research on human rights law, policy and case material
  • Preparing background notes, briefs and analytical reports
  • Assisting in inquiries and examination of complaints
  • Documentation of proceedings and findings
  • Supporting the Commission's publications and studies

Why choose this post

This is the only genuinely research-oriented post in the SSC CGL list, and one of very few where a background in law, social sciences or public policy translates directly into daily work. The posting is in Delhi, the cadre is very small, and the subject matter is meaningful in a way that few administrative posts are. The flip side of a small cadre is limited vacancies and a narrower promotion pyramid.

Perks

  • Substantive research work on human rights and policy
  • Stable office posting in New Delhi
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical benefits and LTC
  • Professional development in a specialised domain

Promotion path

  1. Research Assistant
  2. Senior Research Officer
  3. Higher administrative positions, as per Commission rules

Investigation and Intelligence Posts (Level 6)

Two Level 6 posts carry investigative responsibility, and both sit in organisations with a mandate far bigger than their pay level suggests. Candidates who want investigation work but miss the CBI and ED cut-offs should be looking here rather than settling for an administrative post.

4. Sub Inspector — National Investigation Agency (NIA)

Job profile

Assists in investigating offences affecting national security — terrorism, terror financing, organised crime with a national dimension, and other scheduled offences under the NIA Act.

  • Assisting in investigation of scheduled offences under senior officers
  • Collection, documentation and preservation of evidence
  • Examination of witnesses and recording of statements
  • Participation in searches, seizures and arrests
  • Preparation of case records and support to prosecution
  • Coordination with state police and central agencies

Why choose this post

NIA SI is the strongest argument against ranking by pay level alone. The work is serious counter-terrorism investigation in a specialised national agency, and it is available at a cut-off well below CBI SI. If investigation is what you want, this is a better outcome than a Level 7 desk post — the extra ₹9,500 of entry basic pay buys nothing if you spend thirty years moving files you do not care about.

Weigh the demands honestly: irregular hours, case-driven travel, sensitive and sometimes distressing case material, and postings determined by branch requirement rather than preference.

Perks

  • Prestigious national investigative agency
  • Genuinely challenging and consequential work profile
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical facilities and LTC
  • Specialised investigative training

Promotion path

  1. Sub Inspector
  2. Inspector
  3. Deputy Superintendent of Police, as per departmental rules

5. Junior Intelligence Officer — Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB)

Job profile

Collects and develops intelligence on narcotics trafficking, assists in investigating offences under the NDPS Act, and supports anti-drug enforcement operations across NCB's zonal units.

  • Intelligence collection and development on trafficking networks
  • Assisting in raids, seizures and controlled deliveries
  • Investigation support in NDPS cases
  • Documentation of seizures and case records
  • Coordination with state police, customs and international agencies

Why choose this post

NCB is a small, specialised enforcement organisation where a junior officer gets meaningful operational exposure early. The intelligence and enforcement work is real, the agency's profile has grown considerably, and coordination with international counterparts is part of the mandate. The demands mirror any enforcement role: unpredictable hours, operational risk, and travel that follows cases rather than a calendar.

Perks

  • Operational intelligence and investigation work
  • Mix of office and field duties
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical facilities and LTC
  • Good career progression in a compact cadre

Promotion path

  1. Junior Intelligence Officer
  2. Intelligence Officer
  3. Superintendent and above, as per departmental rules

Accounts, Supervisory and Administrative Posts (Level 6)

The remaining five posts are office-based roles in finance, tax and trade administration. What distinguishes them from Level 7 secretariat work is that several carry supervisory charge from the start — you are running a section rather than assisting one.

6. Divisional Accountant

Job profile

Maintains the accounts of a works division, verifies expenditure against sanctions, examines contractors' bills and measurement books, audits financial records and assists in budget management. Divisional Accountants are typically attached to public works and engineering divisions, where they act as the financial check on the division's spending.

  • Maintenance and compilation of divisional accounts
  • Scrutiny of contractors' bills, measurement books and vouchers
  • Verification of expenditure against sanctions and estimates
  • Internal audit and financial advice to the Divisional Officer
  • Budget monitoring and reconciliation

Why choose this post

Divisional Accountant carries unusual professional independence for a Level 6 post — you are the financial conscience of the division, and your objection carries weight even against a senior engineer. Fixed office timings, a well-defined role and a solid promotion ladder within the accounts hierarchy make this a strong choice for commerce graduates. Postings follow works divisions, so smaller towns are common.

Perks

  • Fixed office timings and predictable workload
  • Real professional authority within the division
  • Specialist experience in government accounting and works audit
  • DA, HRA, TA, NPS and medical facilities
  • Strong promotion prospects within the accounts cadre

Promotion path

  1. Divisional Accountant
  2. Senior Divisional Accountant
  3. Accounts Officer
  4. Senior Accounts Officer, as per departmental rules

7. Executive Assistant — CBIC

Job profile

Assists in customs and GST administration — processing returns and applications, maintaining official records and correspondence, and supporting the office operations of a commissionerate.

  • Processing GST returns, registrations and refund applications
  • Maintaining departmental records and registers
  • Handling official correspondence and notices
  • Supporting Inspectors and Superintendents in assessment work
  • General office and establishment administration

Why choose this post

Executive Assistant puts you inside CBIC — the same department as the Inspector posts — with a stable office role and the same institutional environment. For candidates who want indirect-tax exposure without field duty or shift work, it is a sensible fit, and internal departmental examinations can open further routes over time.

Perks

  • Stable office environment with regular hours
  • Exposure to GST and customs administration
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical facilities, LTC and paid leave
  • Career growth within the CBIC hierarchy

Promotion path

  1. Executive Assistant
  2. Superintendent
  3. Senior administrative positions, as per departmental rules

8. Office Superintendent — CBDT

Job profile

Supervises office administration in an income tax office — managing staff, controlling records and registers, overseeing establishment matters, and coordinating the administrative side of the office's work.

  • Supervision of ministerial staff and allocation of work
  • Control of records, registers and office documentation
  • Establishment matters — leave, service records, pay bills
  • Coordination with the assessment and administrative wings
  • Ensuring compliance with office procedure

Why choose this post

This is a supervisory role from the outset rather than an assisting one, which suits candidates who prefer managing a team and a process to processing files themselves. You are inside the Income Tax Department, in the same offices as Inspectors, on the administrative side of the house. The work is stable, and the promotion ladder runs through the administrative hierarchy.

Perks

  • Supervisory responsibility from the start
  • Office-based work with regular hours
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical facilities and LTC
  • Good promotion opportunities within the department

Promotion path

  1. Office Superintendent
  2. Administrative Officer
  3. Senior administrative positions, as per departmental rules

9. Section Head — DGFT

Job profile

Supervises administrative functions relating to India's foreign trade — processing export-import licences and authorisations, examining applications under trade promotion schemes, and implementing foreign trade policy at the regional office level.

  • Processing IEC, licence and authorisation applications
  • Examining claims under export promotion schemes
  • Implementing Foreign Trade Policy provisions
  • Supervising section staff and workflow
  • Coordination with exporters, customs and the DGFT headquarters

Why choose this post

DGFT gives you a specialised subject — international trade policy and its administration — that very few government roles touch. The knowledge you build about export incentives, trade documentation and policy schemes is genuinely niche. Regional offices are located in major trading cities, and the work is entirely office-based with regular hours.

Perks

  • Specialised exposure to foreign trade policy
  • Central Government office posting with regular hours
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical facilities and LTC
  • Regular promotions within the DGFT cadre

Promotion path

  1. Section Head
  2. Deputy Director
  3. Joint Director, subject to departmental rules

10. Assistant / Assistant Section Officer — Other Ministries (Level 6)

Job profile

Standard secretariat administration in ministries and departments where the Assistant post is notified at Level 6 — file processing, official correspondence, record maintenance and support for the implementation of departmental schemes.

  • Administrative work and file processing
  • Drafting official correspondence and notes
  • Record and establishment management
  • Assisting in scheme implementation and monitoring
Level 6 or Level 7? Assistant and Assistant Section Officer posts are notified at Level 7 in some ministries and Level 6 in others, and the allocation changes between recruitment cycles. Check the pay level attached to each specific post code in the current notification before ranking it. The Level 7 version of this post is covered in Part 2.

Why choose this post

The same reasoning as its Level 7 counterpart: broad, stable and dependent on which ministry you are allotted. Useful as a mid-list preference rather than a target.

Perks

  • Office-based job with good work-life balance
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical facilities and LTC
  • Paid leave and gazetted holidays
  • Regular departmental promotions

Promotion path

  1. Assistant
  2. Section Officer
  3. Under Secretary
  4. Deputy Secretary, subject to service rules

Why Choose a Pay Level 6 Post?

  • Approximate in-hand salary of ₹50,000 – ₹65,000 per month at entry
  • Permanent Central Government employment with full benefits
  • Excellent work-life balance in most of these posts
  • DA, HRA, TA, NPS, medical facilities and LTC
  • Smaller cadres in several posts, which often means quicker promotion
  • Reachable cut-offs for candidates in the middle of the merit list
  • Work that is genuinely specialised in statistics, accounts, investigation or trade

The honest counterpoint: the entry pay gap against Level 7 is around ₹9,500 in basic pay, and with DA and allowances applied on top, the monthly difference is real. Over a career it narrows if your cadre promotes faster, and widens if it does not. Nobody can tell you in advance which will happen — but "smaller cadre, faster promotion" is a pattern worth investigating for the specific post you are considering, not a guarantee.
