The Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level examination is the single largest gateway into Central Government service for graduates in India. Every cycle, lakhs of candidates compete for posts spread across Ministries, Departments, Constitutional Bodies, Tribunals and Government Organisations — and in the 2026 cycle alone, more than 28 lakh applications were received against roughly 12,256 tentative vacancies.
What makes SSC CGL unusual is that one examination opens more than thirty different career paths. Clear the same Tier 1 and Tier 2 papers and you could end up auditing the Union Government's accounts for the C&AG, investigating financial crime at the Directorate of Enforcement, examining cargo at a customs port, drafting policy files in the Central Secretariat, or running statistical surveys for MoSPI. The pay, the daily work, the transfer policy and the promotion ladder are completely different in each case.
That is exactly why post preference matters so much. Candidates routinely fill their preference form in the last ten minutes before the deadline, based on a friend's advice or a YouTube ranking, and then spend the next decade in a role that never suited them. A post that is perfect for someone who wants field work and investigative authority is miserable for someone who wants fixed hours and a home-state posting.
This guide is written to fix that. It covers every major SSC CGL post in detail — department, classification, pay level, basic pay, approximate in-hand salary, age limit, day-to-day job profile, allowances and perks, and the full promotion chain — so you can build your preference list on facts rather than folklore.
What this guide covers:
Complete post list with department, pay level, basic pay and age limit
7th CPC salary structure and approximate in-hand salary by pay level
Allowances, retirement, medical, leave and travel benefits
Pay Level 8, 7, 6, 5 and 4 posts explained one by one
Job profile, why the post suits certain candidates, and promotion charts
The guide runs across four pages. This page covers the consolidated information and all Pay Level 8 posts.

Important: The exact post list, vacancy count, pay level and age limit for each post are notified afresh in every SSC CGL notification. Posts are occasionally added, withdrawn or re-levelled between cycles. Always cross-check against the official notification PDF on ssc.gov.in before finalising your preference order.
Understanding Pay Levels and Grade Pay
Before the salary tables make sense, it helps to understand what a "pay level" actually is. Under the 7th Central Pay Commission, the old system of pay band plus grade pay was replaced by a single pay matrix. Each post is assigned a level in that matrix, and each level is a column of progressively higher cells. You enter at the first cell and move one cell up with each annual increment.
Older articles and departmental orders still refer to the pre-7th CPC grade pay, and many candidates use both terms interchangeably. The rough correspondence is:
Pay Level
Old Grade Pay
Entry Basic Pay
Matrix Range
Level 8
₹4,800
₹47,600
₹47,600 – ₹1,51,100
Level 7
₹4,600
₹44,900
₹44,900 – ₹1,42,400
Level 6
₹4,200
₹35,400
₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400
Level 5
₹2,800
₹29,200
₹29,200 – ₹92,300
Level 4
₹2,400
₹25,500
₹25,500 – ₹81,100
Two practical points follow from this. First, the gap between levels widens over a career — a Level 8 officer and a Level 4 employee start about ₹22,000 apart in basic pay, but that difference roughly triples by the top of each matrix. Second, your pay level determines far more than salary: it sets your seniority, the promotion posts you are eligible for, your HRA and TA slabs, and in several departments your entitlement to government accommodation and official vehicles.
SSC CGL Salary Structure (7th CPC)
Every SSC CGL employee receives a fixed basic pay according to the assigned pay level, and on top of that a set of allowances that together add a substantial amount to the monthly figure. The basic pay is uniform across the country; the allowances are what vary by posting.
JSO, Divisional Accountant, Executive Assistant, NIA SI
Level 5
₹29,200
Auditor, Accountant
Level 4
₹25,500

What makes up your monthly salary
Basic Pay — the pay matrix cell for your level and stage.
Dearness Allowance (DA) — a percentage of basic pay, revised twice a year to offset inflation. This is the largest add-on and it grows every cycle.
House Rent Allowance (HRA) — depends on whether your posting city is classified X (metro), Y or Z. The difference between an X-city and a Z-city posting can be several thousand rupees a month.
Transport Allowance (TA) — a fixed amount by pay level and city class, with DA applied on top of it.
Post-specific allowances — some departments carry additional entitlements, for example special security allowance in certain intelligence and enforcement organisations, subject to departmental rules.
What gets deducted
National Pension System (NPS) — employee contribution deducted monthly, with a matching government contribution credited to your pension account.
Income tax (TDS) — deducted at source based on your total annual income and chosen tax regime.
CGHS contribution — a modest monthly amount where the Central Government Health Scheme is applicable at your station.
Group insurance and welfare fund deductions — small, department-specific amounts.
The number that reaches your bank account is basic pay plus allowances minus these deductions. That is why two people at the same pay level, appointed on the same day, can see noticeably different credits — one posted in Delhi and one in a Z-class town are on the same basic pay but very different HRA.
Approximate In-Hand Salary by Pay Level
The figures below are indicative monthly in-hand ranges at entry, after standard deductions. The lower end of each range roughly corresponds to a Z-class posting and the upper end to an X-class metro posting.
Pay Level
Basic Pay
Approx. Monthly In-Hand
Level 8
₹47,600
₹70,000 – ₹85,000
Level 7
₹44,900
₹60,000 – ₹75,000
Level 6
₹35,400
₹50,000 – ₹65,000
Level 5
₹29,200
₹42,000 – ₹55,000
Level 4
₹25,500
₹35,000 – ₹45,000
Read these as estimates, not entitlements. Actual in-hand salary varies with city classification, current DA rate, whether you occupy government accommodation, NPS and tax deductions, and periodic government revisions. Treat the ranges as a way of comparing posts against each other, not as a promise of a specific figure.
Allowances and Perks of SSC CGL Posts
Salary is only part of what an SSC CGL post is worth. The non-salary benefits — medical cover for your family, pension, leave, travel concession and a promotion ladder that does not depend on market conditions — are a large share of the real value of the job, and they apply across all pay levels.

Pay Level 8 sits at the top of the SSC CGL structure. Three posts fall in this level, all under the Indian Audit & Accounts Department in the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, and all classified as Group "B" Gazetted (Non-Ministerial).
Two features set these apart from every other SSC CGL post. The first is gazetted status from day one — your appointment is notified in the Gazette of India, and you can attest documents and issue certificates in an official capacity, which most SSC CGL entrants only reach after a promotion or two. The second is the nature of the work: auditing the accounts of government bodies means you are examining how public money was actually spent, and your observations feed into reports that ultimately reach Parliament or a State Legislature.
There is a trade-off worth knowing before you rank these first. AAO and AAO work is analytical, document-heavy and deadline-driven, with field visits for audit inspections that can take you away from your station for stretches at a time. Candidates who want field authority, uniform, or investigative powers usually find Level 7 enforcement posts a better fit despite the lower pay level.
Note on eligibility: Level 8 posts carry an additional Tier 2 paper requirement in most cycles, and AAO/AAO candidates are assessed on a separate merit list. Check the eligibility and paper structure specified for these posts in the current notification before opting for them.
1. Assistant Audit Officer (Central Cadre)
Department
Indian Audit & Accounts Department (C&AG)
Classification
Group B Gazetted (Non-Ministerial)
Pay Level
Level 8 — ₹47,600
Age Limit
18–30 years
Approx. In-Hand
₹70,000 – ₹85,000
Job profile
The Assistant Audit Officer in the Central Cadre audits the accounts, expenditure and financial operations of Central Government Ministries, Departments, Autonomous Bodies and Public Sector Undertakings. The core question the role asks, over and over, is whether public money was spent in accordance with financial rules and whether the programme it funded actually achieved what it was meant to.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
Conducting financial, compliance and performance audits of auditee organisations
Examining government expenditure, receipts, sanctions and procurement records
Drafting audit observations, paragraphs and inspection reports
Reviewing accounting records, vouchers and financial statements
Participating in audit inspections at offices across India
Assisting senior audit officers in preparing reports that are laid before Parliament
The work is a mix of office-based analysis and official tours for inspection. Tour frequency depends on the wing you are posted to — commercial audit, defence audit, railway audit and civil audit all have different travel patterns.
Why choose this post
Take this post if you are genuinely interested in finance, audit and analytical work rather than just the salary figure. It offers the highest entry pay available through SSC CGL, gazetted rank from day one, structured career growth within a single well-defined department, and work that has real consequences for how public funds are handled. The Central Cadre also gives you exposure to auditing large national organisations rather than state-level bodies.
Salary & perks
Basic Pay ₹47,600 (Level 8) with annual increments
Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance
National Pension System with government contribution
Government medical facilities and CGHS where applicable
Leave Travel Concession and full leave entitlement

Pay Level
Level 8 — ₹47,600
Age Limit
18–30 years
Approx. In-Hand
₹70,000 – ₹85,000
Job profile
The State Cadre Assistant Audit Officer performs the same audit function, but the auditee universe is different: State Government departments, local bodies, panchayati raj institutions and state-funded organisations. You are checking whether state expenditure has been properly accounted for and whether financial rules were followed while implementing government programmes.
Responsibilities include:
Conducting financial and compliance audits of state departments and bodies
Reviewing departmental expenditure and sanctions
Examining utilisation of grants and public funds
Preparing audit reports and inspection observations
Visiting government offices and field units for inspections
Coordinating with senior audit authorities in the Accountant General's office
The role gives you unusually wide exposure to public finance and state governance — over a few years you see how schemes are actually implemented on the ground, which is a perspective very few desk jobs provide.
Why choose this post
The main practical advantage over the Central Cadre is location stability. State Cadre postings are within an allotted state, which means less uncertainty about where you will live and, for many candidates, the possibility of serving closer to home. Combine that with Level 8 pay, gazetted status and a clear promotion ladder, and it becomes one of the most sought-after SSC CGL positions — particularly for candidates who value predictability over the wider canvas of central audit.
Salary & perks
Basic Pay ₹47,600 (Level 8) with annual increments
Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance
Government medical facilities
National Pension System with government contribution
Leave Travel Concession and full paid leave entitlement
Official tour benefits during audit inspections
Regular promotions within the audit hierarchy

Classification
Group B Gazetted (Non-Ministerial)
Pay Level
Level 8 — ₹47,600
Age Limit
18–30 years
Approx. In-Hand
₹70,000 – ₹85,000
Job profile
Where the AAO audits accounts after the fact, the Assistant Accounts Officer maintains and compiles them. The role covers preparation of government accounts, verification of financial transactions, monitoring of expenditure against budget, reconciliation, and compliance with financial regulations — the machinery that produces the accounts everyone else relies on.
Typical responsibilities include:
Preparation and maintenance of government accounts
Verification and authorisation of financial transactions
Budget monitoring and expenditure control
Compilation of monthly and annual financial statements
Reconciliation with treasuries and departmental figures
Coordination with various government departments on accounting matters
Supporting senior officers in financial reporting
This is the most office-bound of the three Level 8 posts. Tours are limited, hours are regular, and the work follows a predictable monthly and annual accounting cycle with pressure concentrated around closing periods.
Why choose this post
Assistant Accounts Officer suits candidates who want the pay and status of Level 8 without the travel that audit work involves. If you have a commerce or accounting background, the work maps directly onto what you already know, and the specialisation you build — government accounting, budgeting, financial reporting — is genuinely valuable for the rest of your career. For anyone prioritising fixed hours and a settled family life, this is arguably the most comfortable high-pay post in the entire SSC CGL list.
Salary & perks
Basic Pay ₹47,600 (Level 8) with annual increments
Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance
National Pension System with government contribution
Government medical facilities
Leave Travel Concession, paid holidays and full leave entitlement
Professional training programmes in government accounting
Strong long-term career growth within the accounts hierarchy
Promotion path
Assistant Accounts Officer
Accounts Officer
Senior Accounts Officer
Deputy Accountant General or equivalent senior positions, as per departmental rules
Which Level 8 Post Should You Prefer?
All three carry identical pay, identical classification and comparable promotion ladders, so the choice comes down to the shape of your working life rather than the money.
If you want…
Prefer
Because
Widest exposure, national-level organisations
AAO (Central Cadre)
Auditee bodies include central ministries, PSUs and autonomous organisations
Posting stability within one state
AAO (State Cadre)
Cadre is allotted to a state, so transfers stay within it
Fixed hours and minimal travel
Assistant Accounts Officer
Primarily office-based accounting and compilation work
Commerce or accounting background put to use
Assistant Accounts Officer
Work maps directly onto accounting and budgeting skills
Investigation, field authority or uniform
None of these — see Level 7
Audit and accounts roles carry no enforcement powers
One caution worth repeating: candidates often place all three Level 8 posts at the top of the preference list purely because they pay the most, without asking whether audit work suits them. The pay difference over a Level 7 Inspector post is real but not dramatic once DA and allowances are counted, while the difference in daily work is enormous. Rank honestly.
Continue to Part 2 — Pay Level 7 Posts
Pay Level 7 is where most SSC CGL vacancies sit, and where the most competitive posts live: Income Tax Inspector, CBI Sub Inspector, Assistant Enforcement Officer, the three CBIC Inspector posts, and every Assistant Section Officer cadre from the Central Secretariat to the Ministry of External Affairs. Part 2 covers all fifteen of them in the same detail.
Disclaimer: Pay levels, age limits, post lists and departmental allocations are as per the latest SSC CGL notification and 7th CPC pay matrix, and are subject to change by the Commission and the concerned departments. In-hand salary figures are approximations for comparison only. Confirm all details from the official notification at ssc.gov.in before making decisions.
