SSC CGL Pay Level 7 Posts: Salary, Job Profile, Perks & Promotion

Last updated: 7 August 2026

Pay Level 7 is the centre of gravity of the entire SSC CGL examination. Most vacancies sit here, most serious candidates are aiming here, and almost every post that has a reputation attached to it — Income Tax Inspector, CBI Sub Inspector, Assistant Enforcement Officer, Customs Preventive Officer — is a Level 7 post. All fifteen carry the same entry basic pay of ₹44,900 and an approximate in-hand salary of ₹60,000 to ₹75,000 depending on your posting city.

Because the pay is identical across all fifteen, your preference order at this level is entirely a decision about what you want your working life to look like. That is a much harder question than "which post pays more", and it is the one most candidates skip.

Broadly, Level 7 splits into three very different families of work:

  • Secretariat and administrative posts — the Assistant Section Officer cadres in CSS, IB, Railways, MEA, AFHQ, MeitY and other ministries. File work, note drafting, policy processing. Predictable hours, mostly Delhi-centric, promotion through the Under Secretary ladder.
  • Tax and customs posts — Income Tax Inspector and the three CBIC Inspector posts. A mix of office assessment work and field duty, with departmental authority and a well-defined promotion path to Commissioner-level ranks.
  • Investigation and enforcement posts — CBI Sub Inspector, Assistant Enforcement Officer, Narcotics Inspector. Case work, raids, evidence, court proceedings. Irregular hours, high responsibility, high prestige.

Below, each of the fifteen posts is covered with its department, pay, age limit, day-to-day job profile, perks and full promotion chain.

Assistant Section Officer Posts (Level 7)

The Assistant Section Officer is the entry-level officer in India's file-based administrative system. Whatever the ministry, the core work is similar: you receive a case, examine the papers, put up a note recording the facts, the rules that apply and the options available, and send it upward for a decision. What changes between cadres is the subject matter of those files, the posting city, and the promotion ladder above you.

If you want fixed hours, weekends that are actually free, no field duty and no public-facing pressure, this family is where you should be looking. If you want authority, investigation or variety, it is not.

1. Assistant Section Officer — Central Secretariat Service (CSS)

Job profile

Handles government files, drafts official notes and letters, processes proposals, maintains records, coordinates between ministries, and assists in implementing policy decisions. You work inside a ministry's section, reporting to a Section Officer, on subjects that ministry owns.

  • Examining case files and putting up notes with facts, rules and options
  • Drafting official correspondence, replies and office memoranda
  • Processing proposals moving between ministries and departments
  • Preparing material for parliamentary questions and committee references
  • Record management and file movement

Why choose this post

CSS is the classic choice for candidates who want a stable Delhi posting and the deepest promotion ladder available through SSC CGL. Because the Central Secretariat runs the machinery of the Union Government, an ASO here sees policy formation at close range from the start of their career. The known drawback is that Delhi's cost of living absorbs a good part of the HRA, and transfers happen between ministries rather than between cities — some people find that variety refreshing, others find it disruptive.

Perks

  • Regular office hours with a genuinely good work-life balance
  • Posting mainly in New Delhi with X-class HRA
  • DA, HRA, TA, NPS and government medical facilities
  • Leave Travel Concession and full leave entitlement
  • Direct exposure to Central Government administration and policy work

Promotion path

  1. Assistant Section Officer
  2. Section Officer
  3. Under Secretary
  4. Deputy Secretary
  5. Director
  6. Joint Secretary — subject to service rules and vacancy position

2. Assistant Section Officer — Intelligence Bureau (IB)

Job profile

Performs administrative and intelligence-support work within India's internal intelligence agency: managing confidential records, handling classified correspondence, coordinating internal communications and supporting operational units with administrative backup.

  • Maintenance and security of confidential and classified records
  • Processing administrative and establishment files
  • Coordinating internal communication between IB units
  • Supporting operational wings with documentation and logistics

Why choose this post

The appeal is the organisation rather than the task list — this is India's premier intelligence agency, and the environment, vetting standards and confidentiality culture are unlike any ordinary ministry. Candidates should be clear, though, that the ASO role here is an administrative one supporting intelligence work, not a field intelligence role. The security clearance process is also more demanding than for other posts.

Perks

  • Opportunity to serve in India's premier intelligence organisation
  • Special Security Allowance, where applicable under departmental rules
  • DA, HRA, TA and government medical facilities
  • Job security and structured departmental training
  • Exposure to national security administration

Promotion path

  1. Assistant Section Officer
  2. Section Officer
  3. Under Secretary
  4. Deputy Secretary

3. Assistant Section Officer — Ministry of Railways

Job profile

Handles administrative work in the Railway Board — policy files relating to railway operations, establishment matters, correspondence with zonal railways, and coordination across directorates.

  • Processing railway policy and establishment files
  • Correspondence with zonal railways and production units
  • Preparing briefs, notes and replies for senior officers
  • Record management and inter-directorate coordination

Why choose this post

A settled office job inside the country's largest employer, with the practical advantage of railway travel concessions for you and your family as per applicable rules — a benefit that quietly adds up over a career if you travel often. The work is stable and predictable; candidates looking for dynamism will find it repetitive.

Perks

  • Stable office posting with regular hours
  • Railway travel concessions as per applicable rules
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • LTC and government medical facilities
  • Good work-life balance

Promotion path

  1. Assistant Section Officer
  2. Section Officer
  3. Under Secretary

4. Assistant Section Officer — Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)

Job profile

Assists in administrative work relating to India's foreign affairs — consular matters, mission establishment, diplomatic correspondence, visa and passport policy files, and coordination with Indian embassies and high commissions.

  • Processing files relating to bilateral and consular matters
  • Supporting the administration of Indian missions abroad
  • Handling diplomatic correspondence and documentation
  • Assisting with protocol and visit-related arrangements

Why choose this post

MEA is the only SSC CGL post that routinely sends you abroad. Officials are posted to Indian missions in rotation, and during a foreign posting the compensation package — foreign allowance and, subject to rules, accommodation — is substantially higher than the domestic figure. For candidates who want international exposure without clearing the Foreign Service exam, nothing else on the list compares. The trade-off is real: foreign postings are allotted by departmental requirement, not preference, and they can mean years in a difficult station away from extended family.

Perks

  • Foreign postings in Indian missions based on departmental requirement
  • Foreign Allowance during overseas posting
  • Government accommodation abroad, subject to rules
  • International exposure and a distinctive career profile
  • DA, HRA, TA, NPS, medical facilities and LTC while in India

Promotion path

  1. Assistant Section Officer
  2. Section Officer
  3. Under Secretary
  4. Director-level positions, as per service rules

5. Assistant Section Officer — Armed Forces Headquarters (AFHQ)

Job profile

Performs civilian administrative work supporting Army, Navy and Air Force Headquarters — establishment matters, procurement files, personnel administration and coordination between service branches and the Ministry of Defence.

  • Processing establishment, personnel and administrative files
  • Handling procurement and budget-related documentation
  • Coordination between service headquarters and MoD
  • Record maintenance, including classified documents

Why choose this post

AFHQ suits candidates who want a disciplined, orderly office culture and proximity to defence administration without joining the armed forces. Note that this is a civilian post — you are not a service officer and do not hold rank — but you work alongside uniformed officers and share parts of their institutional environment.

Perks

  • Disciplined, well-structured office environment
  • CSD canteen facilities where applicable
  • Government medical facilities
  • DA, HRA, TA, NPS and LTC
  • Good promotion opportunities within the AFHQ cadre

Promotion path

  1. Assistant Section Officer
  2. Section Officer
  3. Administrative Officer

6. Assistant Section Officer — Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY)

Job profile

Handles administrative work relating to digital governance, IT policy and e-governance projects — processing scheme files, coordinating with implementing agencies, and supporting policy work on India's digital infrastructure.

  • Processing files on IT policy, digital initiatives and e-governance schemes
  • Coordinating with attached offices and implementing agencies
  • Preparing notes, briefs and scheme documentation
  • Administrative and establishment work within the ministry

Why choose this post

Of the ASO cadres, MeitY is the one working on the newest subject matter — digital identity, data governance, electronics manufacturing, public digital infrastructure. Candidates with a technology background often find the files here more engaging than general administration, and the ministry's remit has been expanding rather than shrinking.

Perks

  • Modern office environment and contemporary subject matter
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Government medical facilities and LTC
  • Gazetted holidays and full leave entitlement
  • Skill development and training opportunities in digital governance

Promotion path

  1. Assistant Section Officer
  2. Section Officer
  3. Under Secretary

7. Assistant / Assistant Section Officer — Other Ministries & Departments

Job profile

A catch-all category covering Assistant and ASO posts in ministries and departments outside the named cadres above. The work is standard secretariat administration: file processing, record management, official correspondence and support for policy implementation, on whatever subject the parent ministry handles.

  • Administrative work and file processing
  • Drafting official correspondence and notes
  • Record and establishment management
  • Assisting in implementation of departmental schemes

Why choose this post

This category is worth keeping reasonably high in your preference list precisely because it is broad — the parent ministry may turn out to be one with an interesting mandate, comfortable location and quick promotions. The uncertainty cuts both ways, so treat it as a solid fallback rather than a target.

Check the current notification: Assistant and ASO posts in some ministries are notified at Level 7 and in others at Level 6, and the allocation changes between cycles. Confirm the pay level attached to each specific post code in the official notification before ranking it.

Perks

  • Stable Central Government career
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Government medical facilities and LTC
  • Paid leave and gazetted holidays
  • Regular departmental promotions

Promotion path

  1. Assistant
  2. Section Officer
  3. Under Secretary

Tax and Customs Posts (Level 7)

These four posts — one under CBDT and three under CBIC — are the most competitive in the whole examination. They combine departmental authority, a mix of office and field work, and promotion ladders that reach Commissioner rank. They also come with public-facing responsibility and, in the enforcement wings, unpredictable hours.

8. Inspector of Income Tax

Job profile

Works on income tax assessment, surveys, investigation, recovery and taxpayer services. Depending on the wing you are posted to — assessment, TDS, investigation or recovery — the balance between desk work and field work shifts considerably.

  • Assisting in scrutiny assessment and verification of returns
  • Participating in surveys and search-and-seizure operations under senior officers
  • Examining books of account and financial records
  • Handling TDS compliance and recovery proceedings
  • Taxpayer services, notices and correspondence

Why choose this post

Income Tax Inspector is consistently the most-preferred SSC CGL post, and the reasons are substantive rather than sentimental: real departmental authority from an early stage, exposure to complex financial work, a clear promotion ladder to Income Tax Officer and beyond, and postings across the country in reasonably large cities. Be aware that promotion speed varies sharply by region — the same batch can see very different timelines depending on the zone they are allotted.

Perks

  • One of the most prestigious posts available through SSC CGL
  • Mix of office and field duty rather than pure desk work
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Government medical facilities and LTC
  • Strong promotion prospects and departmental training
  • Job security and a well-regarded professional identity

Promotion path

  1. Inspector of Income Tax
  2. Income Tax Officer
  3. Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax
  4. Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax and above, as per departmental rules

9. Inspector (Central Excise / GST)

Job profile

Monitors GST and indirect tax compliance — verifying registrations and returns, conducting audits of taxpayers, participating in anti-evasion work, and processing refunds and clarifications.

  • Scrutiny of GST returns and registrations
  • Departmental audit of registered taxpayers
  • Anti-evasion inspections and enforcement support
  • Processing refund claims and departmental correspondence
  • Range and division-level administrative work

Why choose this post

Central Excise Inspectors are posted across the whole country rather than only at ports and airports, which usually means a better chance of a home-state or nearby posting than the other two CBIC posts. The GST regime has also made this the busiest indirect tax role, with genuine specialist knowledge to build. Promotion to Superintendent is generally the first milestone, and its timing varies significantly by zone.

Perks

  • Combination of office and field duties
  • Wide geographical spread of postings across India
  • DA, HRA, TA, NPS and medical facilities
  • LTC and full leave entitlement
  • Departmental training in GST law and audit

Promotion path

  1. Inspector (Central Excise / GST)
  2. Superintendent
  3. Assistant Commissioner
  4. Deputy Commissioner and above, as per departmental rules

10. Inspector (Preventive Officer)

Job profile

Works on the preventive side of Customs — stopping smuggling and supervising customs operations at airports, seaports and land border stations. This is the most field-oriented of the CBIC posts and typically involves shift duty.

  • Passenger and baggage screening at airports and ports
  • Anti-smuggling patrols and interception operations
  • Supervision of vessel and cargo movement
  • Seizure documentation and follow-up proceedings
  • Coordination with other enforcement agencies

Why choose this post

If the idea of a desk job puts you off, this is the antidote. Preventive Officers work at the sharp end of customs enforcement, and the work is genuinely varied and consequential. Two things to weigh honestly: postings are concentrated at port and airport cities, which limits location choice, and rotating shift duty including nights is part of the job for much of your early career.

Perks

  • Airport and seaport postings with active field work
  • Uniform duties where applicable
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical facilities and LTC
  • Departmental training in customs enforcement

Promotion path

  1. Preventive Officer
  2. Superintendent
  3. Assistant Commissioner
  4. Deputy Commissioner and above, as per departmental rules

11. Inspector (Examiner)

Job profile

Examines imported and exported goods, verifies customs declarations and supporting documents, checks classification and valuation, and clears cargo for release.

  • Physical examination of import and export consignments
  • Verification of bills of entry, shipping bills and supporting documents
  • Checking classification, valuation and duty computation
  • Detecting mis-declaration and referring cases for action
  • Coordination with custodians, brokers and shipping lines

Why choose this post

Examiner work is technical and detail-heavy — you build real expertise in tariff classification, valuation and trade documentation, which is specialised knowledge with lasting value. The cadre is smaller and concentrated at major ports, so postings are limited to a handful of cities. Candidates from major port cities often rank this very high for exactly that reason.

Perks

  • Port and customs house postings
  • Technical, professional work environment
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical facilities and LTC
  • Good promotion opportunities within the customs hierarchy

Promotion path

  1. Examiner
  2. Appraiser / Superintendent, as applicable
  3. Assistant Commissioner
  4. Deputy Commissioner and above, as per departmental rules

Investigation and Enforcement Posts (Level 7)

These posts carry statutory investigative responsibility. The work is case-driven, often unpredictable, and involves evidence handling and court proceedings. They attract the most attention in candidate forums and deserve the most honest assessment: the prestige is real, and so are the hours.

12. Assistant Enforcement Officer (AEO)

Job profile

Investigates money laundering under PMLA and foreign exchange violations under FEMA. The work involves tracing financial trails, examining banking and corporate records, recording statements, assisting in searches and attachment of assets, and supporting prosecution.

  • Analysis of financial records, bank statements and corporate documents
  • Assisting in searches, seizures and attachment proceedings
  • Recording statements and preparing case documentation
  • Coordinating with banks, regulators and other agencies
  • Supporting adjudication and prosecution proceedings

Why choose this post

AEO gives you a front-row seat to high-profile financial investigation early in your career, and the analytical skill you build — following money through layers of entities — is rare and transferable within government. It suits candidates with a commerce, finance or law inclination. The workload is heavy and deadline-driven, cases attract public and media attention, and the cadre is small, which means promotions depend on limited vacancies.

Perks

  • Involvement in significant financial investigations
  • Special Security Allowance, where applicable under departmental rules
  • Mix of office analysis and field operations
  • DA, HRA, TA, NPS, medical facilities and LTC
  • High-prestige department with specialised training

Promotion path

  1. Assistant Enforcement Officer
  2. Enforcement Officer
  3. Assistant Director
  4. Deputy Director and above, as per departmental rules

13. Sub Inspector — Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)

Job profile

Conducts criminal investigation in cases handled by the CBI — corruption, economic offences and special crimes. Responsibilities include collecting and preserving evidence, examining witnesses, participating in raids, preparing case diaries and chargesheets, and appearing in court.

  • Investigating cases under the supervision of senior officers
  • Collecting, documenting and preserving evidence
  • Examining witnesses and recording statements
  • Participating in searches and arrests
  • Preparing case files, reports and chargesheets
  • Assisting the prosecution during trial

Why choose this post

CBI SI carries more public respect than almost any other post on this list, and the work is genuine criminal investigation rather than administrative support. It is a strong choice for candidates in the middle of the merit range who want an investigative career, since it is often reachable when the very top posts are not. The trade-offs must be taken seriously: irregular hours, case pressure, court appearances that continue for years, physical and medical standards at appointment, and postings determined by branch requirement.

Perks

  • Highly respected investigative post with real professional authority
  • Special Security Allowance, where applicable under departmental rules
  • Structured investigative training
  • DA, HRA, TA, NPS, medical facilities and LTC
  • Strong long-term career growth for capable investigators

Promotion path

  1. Sub Inspector
  2. Inspector
  3. Deputy Superintendent of Police
  4. Additional Superintendent of Police and above, as per departmental rules

14. Inspector (Posts)

Job profile

Supervises the working of post offices within a sub-division — inspecting offices, verifying accounts and cash, investigating complaints and fraud, and monitoring the quality of postal and financial services delivered to the public.

  • Periodic inspection of post offices in the sub-division
  • Verification of cash, stamps and savings-bank accounts
  • Investigation of complaints, fraud and irregularities
  • Monitoring mail operations and service standards
  • Supervising staff and coordinating with divisional offices

Why choose this post

Inspector Posts gives you supervisory responsibility over a defined territory very early — you are effectively running quality control for a cluster of post offices, which is a genuine management role rather than an assisting one. Postings reach smaller towns and rural areas that other Level 7 posts never touch, which is an advantage if you want to serve near home and a disadvantage if you want a metro life. Local travel within the sub-division is a routine part of the job.

Perks

  • Independent supervisory role with defined territorial charge
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical facilities and LTC
  • Government accommodation, subject to availability
  • Generally good work-life balance outside inspection periods

Promotion path

  1. Inspector (Posts)
  2. Assistant Superintendent of Posts
  3. Superintendent of Posts
  4. Senior administrative positions, as per departmental rules

15. Inspector — Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN)

Job profile

Supervises the regulation of licit narcotics — opium cultivation licensing, crop measurement and yield verification, inspection of licensed premises, and enforcement action against diversion and illicit cultivation.

  • Licensing and supervision of opium cultivation
  • Field measurement of crops and verification of yields
  • Inspection of licensed manufacturers and premises
  • Enforcement action against illicit cultivation and diversion
  • Maintaining statutory records and reports

Why choose this post

CBN is a small, specialised organisation with a mandate few people know exists, and the work mixes regulatory administration with genuine field enforcement. Postings are concentrated in the opium-growing belt — chiefly parts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh — which makes it an attractive option for candidates from those states and a limiting one for everyone else. Field seasons involve extensive rural travel.

Perks

  • Mix of regulatory office work and field enforcement
  • DA, HRA, TA and NPS
  • Medical facilities and LTC
  • Government accommodation, subject to availability
  • Good promotion opportunities in a small cadre

Promotion path

  1. Inspector
  2. Superintendent
  3. Assistant Narcotics Commissioner

  • 📈 Annual increment on the fixed increment date
  • 💵 Dearness Allowance, revised periodically

Post-specific allowances — special security allowance in certain intelligence and enforcement organisations, railway travel concession in the Railways cadre, foreign allowance during an MEA overseas posting — apply only where the concerned department's rules provide for them, and those rules change from time to time. Verify current entitlements from the department rather than from candidate forums.

Which Pay Level 7 Post Should You Prefer?

Since the pay is identical across all fifteen, rank them by the life you want, not the label. Use this as a starting point and adjust for your own state, family situation and temperament.

One honest caution: promotion speed at Level 7 depends far more on your zone, cadre size and vacancy position than on the post's reputation. Two candidates in the same batch, same post, different zones can be several years apart at their first promotion. Ask serving officers about the specific cadre and zone before you commit a preference order to it.

Disclaimer: Pay levels, age limits, post allocations, allowances and promotion hierarchies are as per the latest SSC CGL notification, the 7th CPC pay matrix and departmental rules, all of which are subject to change.
