Environment & Geography Disaster Management Himalayan Region

Nepal Flash Floods Triggered by Glacier Collapse and Landslide

  • A devastating flash flood struck the Nepal–China border region in August 2026, causing major destruction to towns, roads and bridges and resulting in loss of life.
  • Scientists investigating the disaster are focusing on the possibility that it was triggered by a major glacier collapse and landslide.
  • The event occurred in the Himalayan region, an area highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters.

Glacier Collapse and Debris Flow

  • The first indication of the disaster came at around 8:37 a.m. local time, when strong ground shaking was detected along the Nepal–China border.
  • The shaking was initially identified by the US Geological Survey (USGS) automated system as an earthquake.
  • The USGS later clarified that the shaking was caused by an exceptionally powerful glacier collapse and debris flow, equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
  • Satellite imagery indicated that a huge section of glacier had broken away from a mountain and plunged towards the river below.
  • Scientists believe a landslide may have occurred simultaneously, producing a destructive mixture of rock, ice and water.
  • The debris entered the Lhende Khola River, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi River.
  • The Bhote Koshi flows from China into Nepal.

Flash Flood Wave

  • The collapse generated a powerful flood wave containing:
    • Water
    • Pulverised ice
    • Rock
    • Sediment
  • According to scientists quoted in the report, the flood wave travelled the first 22 km at an average speed of about 193 km/h.
  • This corresponds to approximately 120 mph.
  • The rapid movement of the flood wave made the event particularly destructive and difficult to predict.

What is a Flash Flood?

  • A flash flood is a sudden, rapid and highly localised flood that develops within a very short period — generally within six hours of the triggering event, and often within minutes.
  • It is distinguished from an ordinary riverine flood by its speed of onset, short duration and extremely high destructive energy, not by the volume of water alone.
  • Main causes:
    • Cloudbursts and intense, short-duration rainfall (a cloudburst is rainfall of 100 mm or more in one hour over a small area)
    • Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) — the sudden bursting of a moraine-dammed glacial lake
    • Glacier or ice avalanche collapse, as suspected in the Nepal event
    • Landslides and rockfalls that temporarily block a river and then breach
    • Failure of a dam, embankment or barrage
    • Poor urban drainage and encroachment on natural drainage channels
  • Typical characteristics: very high velocity, a steep and sudden rise in water level, and a heavy load of debris — boulders, silt, ice and uprooted trees — which is what destroys bridges and roads.
  • Why the Himalayas are vulnerable: steep gradients, young and fragile fold mountains, heavy monsoon rainfall, rapid glacial retreat due to global warming, expanding glacial lakes, and unplanned construction of roads, hydro projects and settlements along narrow river valleys.
  • Mitigation measures: early warning systems and automatic weather stations, satellite and drone monitoring of glacial lakes, controlled lowering of dangerous lake levels, hazard-zone mapping, regulated construction in river valleys, and community-level evacuation drills.
  • In India, disaster response is coordinated by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), headed by the Prime Minister, with the NDRF as the specialised response force. Both were established under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
Geography link-up: The Bhote Koshi is one of the headstreams of the Koshi (Kosi) river system, which rises in Tibet/Nepal and joins the Ganga in Bihar. The Kosi is popularly called the “Sorrow of Bihar” because of its frequent floods and its tendency to shift its course.

Daily Current Affairs 29 August 2026 for SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS and CPO

This page carries the complete current affairs of 29 August 2026, prepared specifically for candidates preparing for SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, SSC MTS, SSC CPO, SSC GD Constable and other competitive examinations. Every topic on this page has been written in the short, factual, one-line style that the General Awareness section of SSC papers actually tests — dates, full forms, ministries, venues, headquarters, appointments and numbers — rather than long news reporting.

The seven topics covered today are National Sports Day and the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the Fourth India–Argentina Joint Trade Committee meeting at Buenos Aires, the launch of the sovereign AI stack ‘Gnani Artha’ by the Vice President, the Prime Minister's visit to Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic for the 26th SCO Summit at Bishkek, the PARIVARTAN Scheme for replacing old trucks and buses in the NCR, the flash floods along the Nepal–China border caused by a suspected glacier collapse, and the Sardar Patel National Unity Award whose first recipients are expected to be announced on 31 October 2026. Each topic ends with an Important Facts for Exams box, and the page closes with 10 practice MCQs with answers.

Why daily current affairs matter in the SSC exam

In SSC CGL Tier I, the General Awareness section carries 25 questions of 2 marks each, that is 50 marks out of 200, and it must be completed in a locked 15-minute sectional window under the 2026 pattern. Unlike Quantitative Aptitude or Reasoning, General Awareness rewards recall rather than calculation, so a well-prepared candidate can finish the whole section in seven or eight minutes and carry the saved time as a psychological cushion into the rest of the paper.

Within that section, current affairs typically account for a meaningful share of questions, and the questions are almost always factual one-liners — who launched a scheme, where a summit was held, which ministry implements a programme, what a scheme's full form is. That is exactly why this page is written as short bullet facts rather than paragraphs of analysis.

How to use this daily current affairs page effectively

  1. Read the “Today at a glance” box first. Seven lines, under two minutes. If you are short on time on a busy day, this alone keeps you current.
  2. Then read each topic once, slowly. Do not try to memorise on the first pass — understanding what happened makes the facts stick far better than rote repetition.
  3. Revise only the Important Facts for Exams boxes. These are deliberately written in question–answer shape, so they double as a revision sheet in the last week before the exam.
  4. Attempt the 10 MCQs the same day. Active recall on the day you read something is worth several passive re-readings later.
  5. Do a weekly sweep every Sunday. Open the last seven date pages from the archive and read only the fact boxes — that takes about fifteen minutes and covers a full week.
  6. Link every current affair to static GK. When you read about the SCO summit, revise the SCO headquarters and member capitals at the same time. SSC frequently mixes the two.

Standard categories SSC asks current affairs from

Over the last several exam cycles, current affairs questions in SSC papers have clustered into a predictable set of buckets. Reading with these buckets in mind makes your notes far easier to revise:

Is current affairs enough to score well in SSC General Awareness?
No. Current affairs are important but static GK — History, Geography, Polity, Economics and Science — still carries the larger share of the General Awareness section. The most reliable approach is to read current affairs daily for about ten minutes and revise static GK chapter-wise alongside, using chapter-wise tests to check retention.
