Word-Pair & Mixed Classification Tests — Pick a Level and Start

Tap a level to see every test in it. Level 1 is set at real SSC CGL difficulty — start there the day you finish the concept. Level 2 is pitched above the exam, to push accuracy under pressure.

Level 1 SSC CGL Level Checking… View tests

Same difficulty as the real SSC CGL paper — one clear relationship per question. Synonym and antonym pairs, member and class, worker and tool, worker and workplace, object and attribute, three-word groups, shifted or reversed letter clusters and letters with their positions. A steady score here means the chapter is exam-ready.

Harder than the exam asks. All four pairs share the obvious relationship — every pair is an antonym, or every term has a letter and a number — and a quieter one decides, such as degree of intensity, direction, a shift of two places or a total of positions. Wrong options are built from the right topic but the wrong relationship.

Every classification question gives four items where three share one property and one does not. Find what the three have in common first, in one short sentence, and only then pick the item that breaks it — looking for “the strange one” without a rule is how the trap options win.

Marks are lost in three places. The first is stopping at the first rule that works — four items can often be split two ways, and only a rule that leaves exactly one out is right. The second is picking the least familiar item instead of the one that breaks the rule. The third is missing the quieter property — at Level 2 all four share the obvious feature and a second one decides.

How Many Word-Pair & Mixed Classification Questions Are Asked in SSC CGL?

Classification (odd one out) is one of the steadiest chapters in SSC CGL reasoning — usually two to three questions in every Tier I shift and a few more in Tier II Paper I. More than 300 verbal classification questions have appeared in SSC papers from 2010 to 2024, and they split into the five chapters below.

Classification chapterShare of past SSC classification questions
Word Classification (single words)31%
Letter Classification (letters & clusters)30%
Number Classification (single numbers)12%
Number-Pair & Triad Classification20%
Word-Pair & Mixed Classification6%

Shares are from SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS, Steno and CPO papers, 2010–2024 (figure-based questions are counted under Figure Classification). Word-pair questions are a small share of the older papers but the format SSC now uses most in Tier II; practise all five chapters so no format surprises you.

What You Will Practice in the Word-Pair & Mixed Classification Chapter

Word pairs

  • Same-meaning and opposite-meaning pairs, degree and gender pairs
  • Member and class, part and whole, raw material and product
  • Worker and tool, worker and workplace, place and activity
  • Object and attribute — shape, number of sides, unit, capital or currency

Word groups

  • Three group nouns, three members of one class, three words in size or stage order
  • Sequence and scale — stage and next stage, smaller and bigger unit, cause and effect

Letters and numbers together

  • Letter-cluster pairs — rearranged, shifted, reversed or mirrored
  • Letter–number terms — a letter with its position, its square or its reverse
  • A word written as its position numbers, and letter–number chains

Relationships worth recognising instantly

ItemWhat to remember
Synonym pairBig : Large
Antonym pairHot : Cold
Worker : ToolTailor : Needle
Worker : WorkplaceDoctor : Hospital
Member : ClassRose : Flower
Shifted clusterABC : CDE — every letter +2
Letter : PositionK – 11
Reversed clusterSKY : YKS

Say the relationship of each pair as a sentence and test all four with it — the odd pair is the one that needs a different sentence.

The three mistakes that cost the most marks

  • Matching the topic instead of the relationship. Doctor : Hospital and Tailor : Needle are both about work, but one is a place and the other a tool.
  • Reading a pair in the wrong direction. Part : Whole and Whole : Part are different rules; keep the order the same in all four.
  • Treating letter-number terms as words. K–11 is a letter and its position, not a coded word; compute the value.

Solved Examples — SSC CGL Word-Pair & Mixed Classification Questions

Q1. Choose the odd pair: Hot : Cold, Early : Late, Rich : Poor, Big : Large.
Hot : Cold, Early : Late and Rich : Poor are opposites; Big : Large are synonyms. Answer: Big : Large
Q2. Choose the odd pair: Tailor : Needle, Carpenter : Saw, Farmer : Plough, Doctor : Hospital.
Tailor, carpenter and farmer are each paired with a tool; a doctor is paired with a workplace. Answer: Doctor : Hospital
Q3. Choose the odd term: C–3, G–7, K–12, P–16.
C = 3, G = 7 and P = 16 match their positions; K is the 11th letter, not 12. Answer: K–12
Q4. Choose the odd pair: Ant : 6, Spider : 8, Bee : 6, Beetle : 6.
Ants, bees and beetles are insects with six legs; a spider has eight. Answer: Spider : 8

How to Prepare Word-Pair & Mixed Classification for SSC CGL

  1. Name the relationship of each pair in one sentence. The odd pair is the one that needs a different sentence.
  2. Keep the direction fixed. Compare all four pairs in the same order, first word to second.
  3. Narrow the rule if two pairs seem to fit. “Both are jobs” becomes “the first uses the second as a tool”.
  4. For letters, convert to positions. A = 1 to Z = 26 shows the shift, the reverse and the total in seconds.
  5. Look for the quieter relationship at Level 2. When every pair is an antonym, compare degree, direction or intensity.
  6. Do Level 1 untimed first, then with the 15-minute clock. Move to Level 2 once Level 1 is steady, and then check yourself on a previous year paper.
