Same difficulty as the real SSC CGL paper — one clear relationship per question. Synonyms and antonyms; worker–tool and worker–workplace; product–raw material; part–whole; animal–young, animal–home and animal–sound; instrument–measure; unit–quantity; study–subject; country–capital and currency; cause–effect; degree of intensity; and individual–group. A steady score here means the chapter is exam-ready.

Harder than the exam asks. Rare words that must be decoded first (garrulous, frugal, pusillanimous); the missing term moved to the first or third place; pair-select questions where three options share a loose link and only one matches the exact relationship; science and technology pairs (xylem, theodolite, lathe); and wrong options built from the right topic but the wrong relationship.

Every word analogy question hides one relationship between the first pair — name that relationship in one short sentence before you look at the options. “A surgeon holds a scalpel while working” is a rule; “both are medical” is not, and a vague rule is exactly what the wrong options are designed to catch.

Marks are lost in three places. The first is reversing the direction — Cow : Calf means adult : young, so Horse : Foal fits and Foal : Horse does not. The second is matching the topic instead of the relationship: for Painter : Brush, “Canvas” is on-topic but it is the surface, not the tool. The third is not knowing the word — Level 2 uses exam vocabulary such as garrulous and frugal, and each solution explains the meaning so the word sticks.

Say the relationship as a sentence — “a ___ is used by a ___” — and test every option with the same sentence.

The three mistakes that cost the most marks

  • Reading the pair backwards. If the first pair is young : adult, the answer must be young : adult too. Check the order of the options, not just the words.
  • Stopping at the first option that is “related”. Several options are always related to the third word. Only one is related in the same way — test all four.
  • Confusing the tool with the material. Sculptor : Chisel is a tool; Sculptor : Marble is the material. The first pair tells you which one is wanted.

Solved Examples — SSC CGL Word Analogy Questions

Q1. Doctor : Stethoscope :: Carpenter : ? Options: Wood, Saw, Chair, Nail.
A doctor works with a stethoscope — worker : tool. A carpenter works with a saw. Wood is his material and a chair is his product. Answer: Saw
Q2. Pen : Write :: Knife : ? Options: Sharp, Steel, Cut, Kitchen.
Object : what it is used to do. A pen is used to write; a knife is used to cut. “Sharp” is a quality, not a use. Answer: Cut
Q3. Lion : Pride :: Wolf : ? Options: Den, Pack, Cub, Howl.
Animal : its group. A group of lions is a pride; a group of wolves is a pack. Den is its home and cub is its young — right topic, wrong relationship. Answer: Pack
Q4. Select the pair that shows the same relationship as Thermometer : Temperature. Options: Clock : Wall, Anemometer : Wind speed, Scale : Wood, Compass : Needle.
Instrument : what it measures. An anemometer measures wind speed. A compass has a needle (part), and a clock hangs on a wall (place). Answer: Anemometer : Wind speed

How to Prepare Word Analogy for SSC CGL

  1. Name the relationship before you read the options. One short sentence is enough — it stops a related-but-wrong option from pulling you in.
  2. Check the direction. Tool : Worker and Worker : Tool are different rules; the options often include both.
  3. Narrow the rule if two options fit. “Body part” becomes “body part used for feeding”; “place” becomes “place where it is made”.
  4. Keep a vocabulary list. Every Level 2 solution explains the rare word; add it to a list and revise it weekly.
  5. Learn the fixed pairs. Animal–young, animal–home, instrument–measure, study–subject and unit–quantity repeat across years.
  6. Do Level 1 untimed first, then with the 15-minute clock. Move to Level 2 once Level 1 is steady, and then check yourself on a previous year paper.

SSC CGL Word Analogy Questions — Frequently Asked Questions

How many word analogy questions are asked in SSC CGL?
Analogy as a whole usually gives two to three questions in Tier I and a few more in Tier II, and meaning-based word pairs are the largest share — roughly three in ten of all analogy questions SSC has set since 2010.
What types of word analogy come in SSC CGL?
Synonyms and antonyms, worker and tool, worker and workplace, product and raw material, part and whole, animal and young or home, instrument and what it measures, unit and quantity, study and subject, country and currency, cause and effect, degree of intensity, and individual and group.
How do I solve word analogy questions quickly?
State the relationship of the first pair as one short sentence, check its direction, and test all four options with that same sentence. If two options still fit, make the sentence more specific until only one does.
Do I need a strong vocabulary for word analogy?
For Level 1, everyday vocabulary is enough. Level 2 uses exam words such as garrulous, frugal and pusillanimous; every solution explains the word, so practising the tests builds the vocabulary as you go.
How many questions are in each analogy practice test?
Twenty-five questions per test, with an optional 15-minute timer and the real exam marking scheme of +2 for a correct answer, −0.5 for a wrong one and 0 for an unattempted question.
Are the analogy tests available in Hindi?
Yes. Questions, options, detailed solutions and shortcut tricks are available in Hindi, and you choose English or Hindi before the test starts.
What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2?
Level 1 is set at real SSC CGL difficulty — one clear rule per question. Level 2 is harder than the exam: two-step rules, the missing term moved to a different place, and wrong options built from rules that almost fit, so only a fully checked answer survives.
