Alphabet Test Practice Tests — Pick a Level and Start
Tap a level to see every test in it. Level 1 is set at real SSC CGL difficulty — start there the day you finish the concept. Level 2 is pitched above the exam, to push accuracy under pressure.
Level 1 SSC CGL Level Checking… View tests
Same difficulty as the real SSC CGL paper — one clear rule per question. Five-word dictionary lists, short words to form from a given word, life stages and size orders to arrange, numbered letters to unscramble, letters that keep their place after sorting, and the nth letter from either end. A steady score here means the chapter is exam-ready.
Level 2 Above SSC CGL Level Checking… View tests
Harder than the exam asks. Six-word lists that share five or six letters, words that are the start of other words, given words of 13 letters or more, options that fail only because one letter is needed twice, digits changed by a rule before you count, and two-step alphabet positions. Wrong options are built from the step most students get wrong.
The alphabet test is really a set of small, exact rules about letters and words. Dictionary order is decided by the first letter that differs. Word formation is decided by counting letters. Logical order is decided by size, time or the steps of a process. Position questions are decided by the place numbers A = 1 to Z = 26. Learn the rule for each form and the questions become mechanical.
Marks are lost in three places. The first is misplacing a short word — Car comes before Card, because a word that is the start of another word always comes first. The second is forgetting to count repeated letters — a word can fail only because it needs one letter twice. The third is counting from the wrong end in position questions — from the right, a letter’s place is 27 minus its place from the left.
How Many Alphabet Test Questions Are Asked in SSC CGL?
The alphabet test usually gives one question in a Tier I shift, sometimes two, and a few more in Tier II Paper I. It is one of the quickest reasoning questions to solve once the rule is known, so it is worth getting every time.
| Question form | What SSC asks |
|---|---|
| Dictionary order | Arrange 4–6 words as in a dictionary, or say which word comes 1st, 3rd or last |
| Word formation | Which word can or cannot be formed from the letters of a given word |
| Logical order | Arrange words by life stage, size, rank, time or the steps of a process |
| Unscrambling & letter coding | Numbered letters to arrange, letter values, the letter that fits every word |
| Letter & digit positions | Letters or digits that keep their place after sorting, or after a rule changes them |
| Letter strings & alphabet concepts | Count a pattern, nth letter from either end, opposite letter, letters between two letters |
The first three forms are the ones seen most often in SSC CGL papers; the rest appear in CGL, CHSL and MTS shifts and in Tier II. Practise all of them so no format surprises you.
What You Will Practice in the Alphabet Test Chapter
Dictionary and logical order
- Dictionary order — words that differ at the 1st, 2nd or 3rd letter, long shared starts, a word that is the start of another, reverse order
- Position in the dictionary — which word comes first, second, third, last or in the middle
- Logical order — life stages, part to whole, production steps, ranks, time spans, natural sequences and cause and effect
Word formation and letter coding
- Words that cannot be formed — a letter is missing, or a letter is needed more times than given
- Words that can be formed, and how many words a set of letters makes
- Words from letters at chosen positions, jumbled words and hidden names
- Unscrambling numbered letters, decoding with a key or with A = 1 to Z = 26, adding a common letter
Positions, strings and alphabet concepts
- Letters or digits that stay in place after sorting a word or a number
- Changing each digit or letter by a rule, then counting; reversing blocks or swapping pairs
- Counting a pattern in a letter string, the missing or most-used letter
- nth letter from the left or right, opposite letters, letters between two letters, pairs with the same gap
Rules worth knowing by heart
| Rule | What to remember |
|---|---|
| Dictionary order | The first letter that differs decides; a shorter word that starts another comes first |
| Word formation | Count every letter of the given word — repeats matter |
| Position from the right | Place from the right = 27 − place from the left |
| Opposite letter | The two places add up to 27 (A–Z, B–Y, M–N) |
| Letters between two letters | Difference of the places minus 1 |
| Landmark letters | E = 5, J = 10, O = 15, T = 20, Y = 25 (“EJOTY”) |
Write the place numbers above the letters when a question has two steps — it takes seconds and removes most counting slips.
The three mistakes that cost the most marks
- Placing a short word after a longer one. Ball comes before Balls and Balloon — nothing comes before something.
- Checking letters but not their count. MOTOR cannot be formed from TOURNAMENT, because it needs two O’s.
- Counting from the wrong end. The 9th letter from the right is R, not I — convert it to a place from the left first.

How to Prepare the Alphabet Test for SSC CGL
- Learn the place numbers of the letters. EJOTY (5, 10, 15, 20, 25) gets you to any letter in one or two steps.
- For dictionary order, compare two words at a time. Find the first letter that differs and move on; never compare all six at once.
- For word formation, count the given word first. Write the letters with their counts, then test each option against them.
- For logical order, name the rule in one phrase. “Smallest to largest”, “first step to last” or “cause to result” — then place the items.
- Read the solution of every wrong answer. The tests explain why each option fits or fails, which is how the rules stick.
- Do Level 1 untimed first, then with the 15-minute clock. Move to Level 2 once Level 1 is steady, and then check yourself on a previous year paper.
