Direction and Distance Practice Tests — Pick a Level and Start
Tap a level to see every test in it. Level 1 is set at real SSC CGL difficulty — start there the day you finish the concept. Level 2 is pitched above the exam, to push accuracy under pressure.
Level 1 SSC CGL Level Checking… View tests
Same difficulty as the real SSC CGL paper — one route of three to five legs and one clear rule per question. Final position and shortest distance, the direction a person faces after a few turns, morning and evening shadows, a renamed compass, two friends walking apart, and places placed one after another on a map. A steady score here means the chapter is exam-ready.
Level 2 Above SSC CGL Level Checking… View tests
Harder than the exam asks. Five-leg routes in mixed units, 45 and 135 degree turns, diagonal legs that cancel or add, answers left as square roots, two or three movers at once, and inverse questions — find the missing leg, the starting direction or a speed from the final gap. Wrong options are built from the step most students get wrong.
Direction and distance is really one idea used many ways: keep track of where you are facing, and where you are. Turns change the facing — a right turn moves North to East to South to West, a left turn the other way. Walking changes the position — add every east-west leg into one total and every north-south leg into another. Almost every question is solved by those two running totals.
Marks are lost in three places. The first is turning from the wrong side — facing South, your left is East, not West. The second is adding the legs instead of measuring the straight line — the distance from the start is the shortest line, found by cancelling opposite legs and then Pythagoras. The third is answering the reverse question — “where is the start from him” is the opposite of “where is he from the start”.
How Many Direction and Distance Questions Are Asked in SSC CGL?
Direction and distance usually gives one question in a Tier I shift, and some shifts skip it; CHSL, MTS and Tier II Paper I ask it a little more often. With a diagram it takes well under a minute, so it is a question worth getting every time.
| Question form | What SSC asks |
|---|---|
| Shortest distance | A route of 3–6 legs with turns — how far is the person from the start |
| Final position | Distance and direction from the start, or the direction of the start from the person |
| Facing after turns | Left, right and about turns, or turns in degrees — which way is the person facing |
| Sun and shadow | Shadow to the left, right, front or back in the morning or evening — find the facing |
| Two people and places | Two people walking apart, places described in a chain, the way back to the start |
| Rotated compass & unknown legs | “If North-East becomes South”, a knocked signpost, or the missing first leg of a route |
The first three forms are the ones seen most often in SSC CGL papers; the rest appear in CGL, CHSL and MTS shifts and in Tier II. Practise all of them so no format surprises you.
What You Will Practice in the Direction and Distance Chapter
Routes, distance and position
- Shortest distance after left and right turns — U-shapes, zigzags, routes that close back to the start
- Distance and direction together, legs in mixed units, and the start seen from the end
- The way back to the start, or to another point, and the distance still to be covered
- Path walked compared with displacement, laps of rectangular and square tracks
Facing, turns and the sun
- Facing after a chain of left, right and about turns, and the starting direction worked backwards
- Turns in degrees — 45, 90, 135, 180 and 270, clockwise and anticlockwise, and the angle between two facings
- Morning and evening shadows, walking towards or away from the sun, two people face to face or back to back
- Renamed or rotated compass directions, knocked signposts and clock hands used as pointers
Two movers, places and diagonals
- Two or three people or vehicles from one point — distance apart and the direction each is moving
- Places described in a chain, equally spaced houses and towers, and “which statement is true”
- Diagonal legs (North-East, South-West) that cancel or combine, and answers left as square roots
- Missing legs found from the final distance or from a condition such as “exactly north-west”
Rules worth knowing by heart
| Rule | What to remember |
|---|---|
| Right and left turns | Right: N → E → S → W. Left: N → W → S → E. Two same-way turns = an about turn |
| Net turn | (rights − lefts) × 90° clockwise; three rights equal one left |
| Degrees on the compass | N 0, NE 45, E 90, SE 135, S 180, SW 225, W 270, NW 315 — add clockwise, subtract anticlockwise |
| Shortest distance | Cancel opposite legs, then distance = √(x² + y²) |
| Common triples | 3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17, 7-24-25 and their multiples |
| Shadows | Morning shadow points West, evening shadow points East |
| Reverse view | “A from B” is the opposite direction of “B from A”, at the same distance |
Draw a quick cross for N, E, S and W before the first leg — it takes seconds and removes most left-right slips.
The three mistakes that cost the most marks
- Turning from the wrong side. Facing South, a left turn takes you East — picture yourself facing that way before you turn.
- Adding all the legs. 6 m East, 8 m North and 6 m West leave you 8 m from the start, not 20 m.
- Answering the wrong way round. If he is North-East of the start, the start is South-West of him.

How to Prepare Direction and Distance for SSC CGL
- Draw a direction cross before the first leg. Mark N, E, S and W, and turn the paper if you need to picture a left or right turn.
- Keep two running totals. One for east-west and one for north-south; cancel opposite legs as you go instead of at the end.
- Learn the four common triples. 3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17 and 7-24-25 turn most distance questions into a one-line answer.
- For turn chains, count instead of drawing. Net turn = rights minus lefts; for degree turns, add clockwise and subtract anticlockwise.
- Read the last line twice. Check whether it asks for the person from the start or the start from the person, and whether it wants the distance, the direction or both.
- Do Level 1 untimed first, then with the 15-minute clock. Move to Level 2 once Level 1 is steady, and then check yourself on a previous year paper.
