Level 1 SSC CGL Level Checking… View tests

Same difficulty as the real SSC CGL paper. Figures of two or three shapes with the mirror on the left, right, above or below; letter-number clusters of five or six characters; water images of figures and clusters; the mirror time of a clock; and questions on letters and words that look the same in a mirror or in water. A steady score here means the chapter is exam-ready.

Harder than the exam asks. Figures of four or five shapes with an inner line, where one wrong option differs from the right one in a single part; clusters of seven to nine characters with lowercase b, d, p and q; a mirror image followed by a water image; clocks with a seconds hand; and the mirror time some minutes later, or the real time from a mirror reading.

Every question in this chapter is a question about one reflection and which way it swaps. A mirror standing on the left or right swaps left and right: parts move across, and every part turns back to front. A water image, or a mirror lying above or below, swaps top and bottom instead. Once you know which swap the question asks for, the right option is the only one that applies it to every part, and the wrong ones each miss it somewhere.

The same idea gives the clock rule. A mirror reverses the dial, so the hands appear at the mirror angles and the time reads as 12 hours minus the real time. The letters that survive a reflection are simply the symmetric ones. Each form has a fixed method, given in full in every solution.

How Many Mirror and Water Image Questions Are Asked in SSC CGL?

Usually one question in a Tier I shift, and the same forms turn up in CHSL, MTS and Tier II. A figure or a letter-number cluster in a mirror is the regular one; water images and the mirror time of a clock come up now and then. The forms are listed below, most common first.

Form of the questionHow often
A figure with the mirror placed at MN (left, right, above or below) — its mirror imageThe most common form

Paper folding, embedded figures and figure completion are practised in the Paper Folding, Embedded & Figure Completion chapter; the angle between the hands of a clock in Calendar & Clock.

What You Will Practice in the Mirror & Water Image Chapter

Figures in a mirror

  • The mirror at MN on the right or left — every part moves to the other side and is turned back to front
  • The mirror above or below — parts swap top and bottom, left and right stay
  • Two or three shapes in a frame (Level 1); four or five shapes with an inner line (Level 2)
  • Level 2 wrong options that differ in one part only: one shape not reversed, parts moved but not flipped

Letter-number clusters

  • Five or six capital letters and digits (Level 1); seven to nine characters with lowercase letters (Level 2)
  • Which characters look the same after reflection and which change
  • The b–d and p–q traps in a side mirror, b–p and d–q in water

Water images

  • Figures and clusters reflected in water below them — turned upside down, order unchanged
  • A mirror image followed by a water image, which is the figure turned through 180° (Level 2)

Clock in a mirror

  • Mirror time = 11:60 − actual time, and the same rule backwards from a mirror reading
  • Times with seconds — subtract from 11:59:60 (Level 2)
  • The mirror time or the real time a given number of minutes later (Level 2)

Letters and words

  • How many letters of a word look the same in a mirror or in water
  • Which word reads the same in a mirror, or looks the same in water

R7kP4R7kP4Water imageTop and bottom swap: every character is turned upside down, but the order of the characters stays the same.
Clock: 4:35Mirror: 7:25Clock in a mirrorThe clock shows 4:35. Its mirror image reads 11:60 − 4:35 = 7:25, and the two times add up to 12:00.

The three mistakes that cost the most marks

  • Flipping the characters but not the order. In a side mirror the last character comes first. Turning each one back to front in its old place is a favourite wrong option.
  • Mixing up the two reflections. A mirror on the left or right swaps left and right; a water image (or a mirror below) swaps top and bottom. Decide which one the question asks before you look at the options.
  • Subtracting from 12:00 without borrowing. Write 12:00 as 11:60 (or 11:59:60 with seconds) first. For a time between 12 and 1, subtract from 23:60.

Solved Examples — SSC CGL Mirror & Water Image

Q1. A wall clock shows 4:35. What time will its mirror image show?
Mirror time = 11:60 − 4:35 = 7:25. Check: 4:35 + 7:25 = 12:00. Answer: 7:25
Q2. A clock shows 3:24:40 (hours:minutes:seconds). What time does its mirror image show?
Subtract from 11:59:60: 11:59:60 − 3:24:40 = 8:35:20. Answer: 8:35:20
Q3. The mirror image of a clock shows 12:20. What is the actual time?
The time lies between 12 and 1, so subtract from 23:60: 23:60 − 12:20 = 11:40. Check: 12:20 + 11:40 = 24:00. Answer: 11:40
Q4. How many letters of the word HISTORY look exactly the same in a mirror placed to their right?
Letters with a vertical line of symmetry look the same: A H I M O T U V W X Y. In HISTORY these are H, I, T, O and Y; S and R change. Answer: 5
Q5. Which of these words reads exactly the same in a mirror placed to its right: NOON, WOW, DEED, TAUT?
A side mirror reverses the order and flips each letter, so the word needs only symmetric letters and must read the same backwards. NOON and DEED use letters that change (N, D, E); TAUT reads TUAT backwards. WOW passes both tests. Answer: WOW
Q6. Which of these words looks exactly the same in its water image: BOY, BOX, FOX, COT?
In water the order stays and each letter turns upside down, so every letter needs a horizontal line of symmetry: B C D E H I K O X. Only BOX uses letters from that list. Answer: BOX

How the Mirror & Water Image Tests Work

  • 25 questions per test, with a full question palette — answered, skipped, marked for review, not visited.
  • Every form in every level — each test mixes figures in a mirror, letter-number clusters, water images, clock questions and letter questions.
  • Figures drawn sharp on any screen — the question figure with its mirror line MN and all four options are pictures made for the page, so they stay clear on a phone.
  • Optional 15-minute timer — with the clock to build exam speed, without it while you are still learning the chapter.
  • Marking: +2 correct, −0.5 wrong, 0 unattempted — the same scheme as the real paper.
  • Solutions, shortcut tricks and concept notes open after you submit — every part of a figure is followed to its new place and direction, every clock time is worked by subtraction, and every wrong option is given its reason.
  • English and हिंदी, chosen at the start of every test.

How to Prepare Mirror & Water Image for SSC CGL

  1. Ask first: which way does this reflection swap? Mirror left or right: left ↔ right. Mirror above or below, or water: top ↔ bottom. Say it before you look at the options.
  2. In a figure, follow one odd part. Pick the part that is easiest to track — an arrow, a flag, a shaded corner — and find where it goes and which way it points. That alone removes most options.
  3. In a cluster, check both ends. In a side mirror the last character comes first and is reversed. Check the first and last characters of each option before the middle ones.
  4. Learn the two letter lists. Same in a side mirror: A H I M O T U V W X Y. Same in water: B C D E H I K O X.
  5. For clocks, use 11:60. Mirror time = 11:60 − time, and the answer plus the question must make 12:00.
  6. Do Level 1 untimed first, then with the 15-minute clock. Move to Level 2 once Level 1 is steady, and then check yourself on a previous year paper.

SSC CGL Mirror & Water Image — Frequently Asked Questions

How many mirror image and water image questions are asked in SSC CGL?
Usually one question in a Tier I shift. A figure or a letter-number cluster in a mirror is the regular form; water images and the mirror time of a clock appear now and then. The same forms appear in SSC CHSL, MTS and CGL Tier II.
What is the difference between a mirror image and a water image?
A mirror placed to the left or right swaps left and right: the order of the characters reverses and each one is turned back to front, while top and bottom stay. A water image is a reflection in water below the object: it swaps top and bottom, so each character turns upside down while the order stays the same.
How do I find the mirror image of a figure quickly?
Decide which way the mirror swaps the figure, then follow one easy part, such as an arrow or a shaded corner, to its new place and direction. Most wrong options fail on that one part; check the rest of the figure only for the options that are left.
How do I find the time shown by a clock in a mirror?
Subtract the time from 11:60, that is 12 hours written with one hour borrowed as 60 minutes. For example, 4:35 in a mirror reads 11:60 − 4:35 = 7:25. With seconds, subtract from 11:59:60; for a time between 12 and 1, subtract from 23:60. The real time and the mirror time always add up to 12:00.
Which letters look the same in a mirror and in water?
In a mirror placed to the side, the letters with a vertical line of symmetry look the same: A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X and Y. In water, the letters with a horizontal line of symmetry look the same: B, C, D, E, H, I, K, O and X.
How many questions are in each test?
Twenty-five questions per test, with an optional 15-minute timer and the real exam marking of +2 for a correct answer, −0.5 for a wrong one and 0 for an unattempted question.
Are the tests available in Hindi?
Yes. Questions, options, detailed solutions and shortcut tricks are available in Hindi, and you choose English or Hindi before the test starts.
What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2?
Level 1 is set at real SSC CGL difficulty: figures of two or three shapes, clusters of five or six characters, water images, clock mirror time and symmetric letters. Level 2 is harder than the exam: figures of four or five shapes where a wrong option differs in one part, longer clusters with lowercase letters, a mirror image followed by a water image, clocks with seconds and mirror times some minutes later.
