Paper Folding, Embedded & Figure Completion Tests — Pick a Level and Start

Tap a level to see every test in it. Level 1 is set at real SSC CGL difficulty — start there the day you finish the concept. Level 2 is pitched above the exam, to push accuracy under pressure.

Level 1 SSC CGL Level Checking… View tests

Same difficulty as the real SSC CGL paper. A square sheet folded once or twice, mostly along straight lines, with one or two holes punched; a figure (X) of four or five lines hidden in a lightly drawn figure, with turned and mirrored copies as the wrong options; and a figure that is symmetric left to right or top to bottom with one quarter missing. A steady score here means the chapter is exam-ready.

Level 2 Above SSC CGL Level Checking… View tests

Harder than the exam asks. Two or three folds including diagonal folds; triangular holes that turn over at every opening; cuts made right on a fold line, which open into one bigger hole; a figure (X) of six to eight lines in a crowded figure, with near copies that miss one line or lean one line the other way; and patterns built by turning one quarter through 90° at a time.

Loading tests…

These three forms are grouped together because they test the same skill: seeing how a figure is built from its parts. A folded paper is a stack of layers, each a mirror image of the one it was folded onto, so a punch through the stack becomes a pattern of reflections when it is opened. An embedded figure is one set of lines hidden among others, which must be found in the same size and direction. A completion figure is one part repeated by reflection or rotation, with one copy left out.

Each form has a fixed method, given in full in every solution: open the folds in reverse order and count the holes; find the odd part of (X) and trace every line around it; find the symmetry rule and build the missing piece from its neighbour.

How Many Paper Folding, Embedded and Figure Completion Questions Are Asked in SSC CGL?

Usually one or two questions from this group in a Tier I shift, and the same forms turn up in CHSL, MTS and Tier II. Paper folding and embedded figures are the regulars; figure completion appears now and then. The forms are listed below, most common first.

Form of the questionHow often
A paper folded and punched or cut — how it looks when unfoldedThe most common form
The option figure in which the given figure (X) is embedded, without rotationCommon

Mirror and water images are practised in the Mirror & Water Image chapter; dice, cubes and dot situation in Dice, Cube, Cuboid & Dot Situation.

What You Will Practice in the Paper Folding, Embedded & Figure Completion Chapter

Paper folding & punching

  • One or two folds along the vertical or horizontal middle line, one or two holes (Level 1)
  • Two or three folds including diagonal folds, and folds that are not through the middle (Level 2)
  • Circular, square and triangular holes — a triangle turns over every time a fold is opened
  • A cut made right on a fold line, which opens into one bigger hole instead of two
  • Wrong options that miss one opening, reflect about the wrong line, or leave the shapes facing the wrong way

Embedded (hidden) figures

  • A figure (X) of four or five lines in a lightly drawn figure (Level 1)
  • A figure (X) of six to eight lines in a crowded figure (Level 2)
  • Wrong options with a turned or mirrored copy of (X), or a near copy that misses one line or leans one line the other way

Figure / pattern completion

  • A square figure with one quarter missing, symmetric left to right, top to bottom, or both
  • Patterns built by turning one quarter through 90° at a time (Level 2)
  • Wrong options that copy a neighbouring quarter as it is, place the right piece turned or flipped, or miss one detail

The three forms, in pictures

Paper foldingThe left half is folded onto the right and one hole is punched. On opening, the hole gets a mirror copy on the other side of the fold line: two holes, the same distance from the fold.
(X)Embedded figure(X) is the top side, the two half-diagonals and the short vertical line. In the bigger figure all four lines are there, same size and same direction (shown in orange).
?Figure completionEach quarter is the mirror image of its neighbour. So the missing quarter has the arc in its outer corner and the dot towards its lower-left, matching the quarters beside and above it.

The three mistakes that cost the most marks

  • Opening the folds in the wrong order. The last fold made is the first one opened. Each opening adds a mirror copy of every hole about that fold line.
  • Forgetting that shapes turn over. A triangle punched near a fold appears turned over on the other side of it. Options with every triangle pointing the same way are usually wrong.
  • Accepting a turned copy. In embedded figures, (X) must appear in the same size and direction. A copy that is rotated or mirrored does not count, however close it looks.

Solved Examples — SSC CGL Paper Folding, Embedded & Figure Completion

Q1. A square paper is folded once along its vertical middle line, the left half going over the right, and one hole is punched. How many holes are there when it is unfolded, and where?
One fold means two layers, so the punch makes two holes: the one punched and its mirror copy across the fold line, the same distance from it on the left half. Answer: 2 holes, symmetric about the vertical middle line
Q2. A square paper is folded in half and then in half again, and one hole is punched through the folded paper (away from the edges). How many holes appear on unfolding?
Two folds make 4 layers, and the punch goes through every layer. Open the second fold: 2 holes. Open the first: 4 holes. Answer: 4
Q3. A paper is folded in half twice and a small circle is cut exactly at the corner where the two folds meet. What do you see on unfolding?
A cut on a fold line does not make two holes: its two halves open into one shape. Here the cut sits on both fold lines at once, so all four quarter-cuts join at the centre of the sheet. Answer: one circular hole at the centre
Q4. A square paper is folded once along a diagonal and one hole is punched near a corner of the folded triangle. Where is the second hole on unfolding?
Unfolding reflects the hole about the fold line, so the second hole lies on the other side of the diagonal, at the mirror position — the same distance from the diagonal, on the line at right angles to it. Answer: at the mirror position across the diagonal
Q5. Figure (X) has one slanting line leaning to the right. One option shows (X) with that line leaning to the left. Is (X) embedded in it?
No. Embedded means every line of (X) is present in the same size and direction. A copy with one line leaning the other way is a different figure. Answer: not embedded
Q6. A square figure is symmetric about both of its middle lines, and its bottom-right quarter is missing. How is the missing quarter found?
Take the bottom-left quarter and reflect it left to right (or take the top-right quarter and reflect it top to bottom). Both give the same piece; lines that touch the middle lines must meet their partners there. Answer: the mirror image of a neighbouring quarter

How the Paper Folding, Embedded & Figure Completion Tests Work

  • 25 questions per test, with a full question palette — answered, skipped, marked for review, not visited.
  • Every form in every level — each test mixes 10 paper folding questions with 7 or 8 embedded figure and 7 or 8 figure completion questions.
  • Figures drawn sharp on any screen — every fold, punch, hidden figure and missing piece is a picture made for the page, so it stays clear on a phone.
  • Optional 15-minute timer — with the clock to build exam speed, without it while you are still learning the chapter.
  • Marking: +2 correct, −0.5 wrong, 0 unattempted — the same scheme as the real paper.
  • Solutions, shortcut tricks and concept notes open after you submit — every fold is opened in reverse order with the hole count after each step, every hidden figure is located and traced, and every wrong option is given its reason.
  • English and हिंदी, chosen at the start of every test.

How to Prepare Paper Folding, Embedded & Figure Completion for SSC CGL

  1. Count the holes first. Holes punched × 2 for every fold gives the total, unless a cut lies on a fold line. Any option with a different count is out at once.
  2. Open the last fold first. Reflect every hole about that fold line, then move to the fold before it.
  3. Watch the shapes, not just the places. A triangle or half-circle flips each time a fold opens; check which way it faces.
  4. In embedded figures, hunt for the odd part. Find the slanting line or unusual corner of (X) first, then check every other line around it.
  5. In figure completion, find the rule before you look at the options. Mirror left-right, mirror top-bottom, or a 90° turn — then build the missing piece from its neighbour.
  6. Do Level 1 untimed first, then with the 15-minute clock. Move to Level 2 once Level 1 is steady, and then check yourself on a previous year paper.

SSC CGL Paper Folding, Embedded & Figure Completion — Frequently Asked Questions

How many paper folding, embedded figure and figure completion questions are asked in SSC CGL?
Usually one or two questions from this group in a Tier I shift. Paper folding and embedded figures are the regular forms; figure completion appears now and then. The same forms appear in SSC CHSL, MTS and CGL Tier II.
How do I solve a paper folding and punching question?
Open the folds in reverse order, the last fold first. Each time a fold is opened, every hole gets a mirror copy on the other side of that fold line, the same distance from it. Count the holes first: holes punched times 2 for every fold, unless a cut lies on a fold line.
What happens when a cut is made on the fold line?
The cut goes through both layers at the fold, so on opening its two halves join into one complete shape instead of making two separate holes. A half-circle cut on a fold opens into a full circle.
How do I find an embedded figure quickly?
Pick the most unusual part of figure (X), such as a slanting line or an odd corner, and look for it first in each option. Then check that every other line of (X) is there around it in the same size and direction. A turned or mirrored copy does not count.
How do I solve a figure completion question?
Decide how the visible parts are related: mirror images across the middle lines, or the same part turned through 90 degrees each time. Then build the missing part from its neighbour by that rule, and check that lines reaching a middle line meet their partners there.
How many questions are in each test?
Twenty-five questions per test, with an optional 15-minute timer and the real exam marking of +2 for a correct answer, −0.5 for a wrong one and 0 for an unattempted question.
Are the tests available in Hindi?
Yes. Questions, options, detailed solutions and shortcut tricks are available in Hindi, and you choose English or Hindi before the test starts.
What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2?
Level 1 is set at real SSC CGL difficulty: one or two folds with one or two holes, a figure (X) of four or five lines, and patterns symmetric about the middle lines. Level 2 is harder than the exam: two or three folds including diagonal folds, triangular holes that turn over, cuts on a fold line, figures (X) of six to eight lines in a crowded figure, and patterns built by turning one quarter through 90 degrees.
